Groundbreaking design on and off the track at Goodwood 2016

It may be debatable but we’re officially in the midst of summer, and what does a typically British summer entail? Garden parties of course! The Clarity Automotive team took time out of the office to visit one of Britain’s biggest garden parties, Goodwood Festival of Speed, to get a fresh outlook on the automotive industry and get some creative fuel flowing.

This years celebrations were focused around 100 years of BMW. And a significant highlight from our day was the central feature that perfectly encapsulated BMW’s achievements in Motorsports over the past century. The grand installation, designed by British artist Gerry Judah, sat handsomely in front of Goodwood house, which provided a picture-perfect backdrop.

Judah was first commissioned to produce the Festival of Speed central feature in 1997 and, like its predecessors; this year’s feature was constructed by combining steel and world-class performance cars. The large white sculpture (the biggest in FOS history) easily achieved its aspiration of representing 100 years of BMW and more, it characterised BMW as a whole. The three sharp-white forms gave the impression of speed and dynamics, and the three landmark cars (the BMW 328 Mille Miglia Roadster, the 1999 Le Mans-winning BMW V12 LMR, and the Gordon Murray-designed Brabham-BMW BT52 Formula One car) exhibited BMW’s outstanding pedigree.

Despite the name, Goodwood Festival of Speed isn’t all about fast cars and loud noises. It’s the home of distinguished design, exceptional engineering and iconic installations that we’re sure even the ‘un-convertible’ can appreciate.
